Meeting Needs: Food Poverty & Insecurity
1 in 6 households in the UK (16%) experience food insecurity, this is an increase from 14% in 2022. Food insecurity means that at some point in the year a person ran out of food and was unable to afford more, ate less because they couldn’t afford food, went hungry or lost weight.
There are many amazing projects that have emerged as a response to the current needs. Foodbanks, pantries, community markets, warm hubs and so many more enterprises are meeting people where they are and helping to alleviate some of the strains of existing in the current economic climate.
One such project is St Aidans Kitchen at St Aidans Church in Hartlepool. St Aidans is open every Thursday morning providing food parcels and hot food & drinks.
We invite you to use this video in your churches at harvest time, to highlight the current state of food insecurity in the UK and to celebrate some of the work taking place to reduce food poverty.
We would also like to invite you to take part in our harvest reflections events taking places at churches across Durham Diocese. For more information visit our Beyond Food Banks Page.
